I’m really excited about this show because I’ve played with all these bands separately and I think together they will form an indomitable force. There is no pretense about each of these bands. They get together, write great songs and play their hearts out. There are no gimmicks and no bullshit and if you really want some metallic rock then this is where to get it. Plus if you go to this it becomes a show weekend – with Ladderlegs, The Darker Hues, Streight Angular and Daniel Harris at Club Bohemia on 9/24 and Gnome Revolt at Gemstones in Lowell on 9/25

See you there! (click on the flyer to go to the facebook invite!)

Hope to see you there : ) the Musical Theatre goes on around 4:00. I’m really looking forward to this!

Last Thursday, May 21st, The Musical Theatre started recording our first full length album. We don’t have a title for it yet, and our tracklist is in transition, but it looks like there will be ten or eleven songs on it and it will most likely be ready for our August 29th gig @ The Middle East Upstairs. In a surprisingly short period of time we did the initial tracking for “The Fluorescent Office,” and “A Vacuum.”

Listen to the Demos:

Friendly Square, where I live, is slowly being transformed into a home studio. I guess it all began when we started practicing in the basement instead of renting a space and spending money we didnt’ have. I have had a Presonus Firepod for about three years and it has served me really well. However, I have never been able to use it to it’s full “8 in’s at a time” capacity. Then I found a hole in my room that goes directly down to the basement. Abram, Mark, and I decided to pool a little money and we bought an eight input XLR snake, some headphone extensions and a headphone amp and voila, we are now able to record in many different rooms in our house minimizing bleed of instruments and getting a clarity I had previously never achieved in my own home recordings. All in all we were all pretty blown away at the separation. Before I always felt like I was compensating for mistakes I made in the tracking process. Now I feel I am simply enhancing what is already a decent wave form. Exciting right?!

We are also thinking about changing the band’s name to reflect the fact that it is a more collaborative project as opposed to my previous solo efforts. I imagine this will take a while, but if anything it’s been a funny process so far.

Last night I was spontaneously allowed to play one of the final Walker Street Kitchens and I can already tell it’s going to be an emotional event when they finally move out. I’ve been thinking about how grateful I really am to them and how far I’ve come in a little over a year since I moved back from Chicago. Olivia, Stephanie, Bobby, and Co. were really the first ones to give me a chance and take me seriously as a musician even though we had all known each other in many other iterations. I have very fond memories, and luckily, recordings from a few Walker Streets and I have seen and met many incredible bands/artists there, including but not limited to:

Packrat
The Sandcastles (aka The Tiny Tornadoes, aka Shai & Shira Erlichmann (sp?))
The Sinbusters
and a new bro, Gaetana Brown

I also just finished a song about Walker Street tonight. I am excited to play it, but what it commemorates is definitely a little sad.

In other news, the other band I’m in, Radio Control has quite a bit going on. First of all, I finally cut up the DVD I got from Eric Sack and Mike Dailey of the “Live @” show on LTC (Lowell Telecommunications) I was really honored that we were able to do this and I think the footy looks awesome. Take a look below…

It was pretty funny because if you look closely at the window you can see the cop’s flashing blues. Someone in the neighborhood called them because we were too loud even though it was 8 o’clock on a Saturday!

We are also recording. I finished up rough instrumental mixes of the six songs on our forthcoming EP, “Breaker, Breaker 1!2!3!4!” and we are doing vocals tomorrow morning. Hopefully (most likely) if we can get artwork and everything done before our gig on June 3rd @ O’Briens, then we will have them for sale!

Speaking of June 3rd, here is the flyer that Kristina made! (click the picture to be taken to the Radio Control Myspace!)

Looks like the summer is gonna be busy, and definitely skinny cause I’m working less hours at the ’sex, but at least it’ll be filled with tons and tons of music.

Signing off,

Matt(y)
